Unwanted Textured Walls (and How to Get Rid of Them)

Textured, even excavated inside walls, such as those with gorgeously exposed plaster or peeled-back wallpapers, are trending. It's not so great for the different kinds of wall texture: those with the "orange peel," popcorn, or faux-stucco walls that can be found in your home or rental.

What are the textured walls?

Walls with textures (those like "orange peel," popcorn, or swirled patterns) serve a purpose as the texture conceals the traces of drywall installation, that is, the seams that are taped between the drywall sheets meet and other flaws. It's cost-saving. Maybe some people really enjoyed it in the seventies, but the main reason that it's being done today is to reduce costs. It's inexpensive and quick.

It's the reason you'll encounter wall surfaces that are textured in rental or commercial structures. It's also a much more durable wall than smooth walls and is less susceptible to small scratches and tears. Some people feel that it's a bit rough. The imperfections reflect sunlight and cast shadows, making walls that aren't as "boring."

Methods to rid yourself of textured walls that are not needed:

Many of us believe that the most desirable wall is the most smooth that you can find. Here are some strategies to turn a surface that is stippled into a smooth one. These techniques also work on walls that have been damaged in different ways (should you become bored of the old-fashioned plaster look in the near future).

1. Apply a coat of skim.

After the installation of drywall in the first place, the fasteners and seams are coated with a skim coat and then covered by a thin layer of joint compound, also known as "mud," to level the surface for papering or painting. The same method can get rid of walls with textured surfaces. A thin layer of mud is sprayed over the entire surface of the wall, let dry, then sanded to smoothness. For walls with a lot of bumps, it is recommended to apply multiple coats.

The process of skimming over a room can be messy and time-consuming. It is best left to an expert with the expertise (and techniques) to prevent dust from getting into every crevice in your house.

After the surface has been made smooth, it is coated with a primer and then wallpapered or painted, depending on the style you prefer.

2. Replace the textured wall using new, untextured drywall.

This could be less expensive than skim coating the whole room. It's probably your best choice if the texture is particularly heavy--such as the stucco look you might see in a Spanish-style home. However, be aware that installing new drywall is also about skim coating to hide seams to create an even surface, along with all the dust it brings.

3. The walls should be covered with another substance, like wood.

Wood paneling is getting more and more popular in recent times. Companies that manufacture flooring are making walls with stunning wood. If you're looking for industrial style, it's very stylish.

To fix the issue, eliminate the baseboards completely and connect the paneling toward the flooring. We recommend installing a Fry Reglet metal component that keeps the panel's bottom at a level above the floor, making it appear as if the panel is floating (the metal part is virtually unnoticeable).

The alternative is to take out the baseboards, place some of the stock wood on the lower part of the wall, and then reinstall the baseboards flush to the paneling.
